The Driver A Thriller Hart Hanson Books

You know that feeling when you bite into something so incredibly tasty that finishing will bring disappointment? And that you’ll want more?
I was only ten pages in when I started to mourn the end of this highly entertaining crime/thriller/comedy/romance/police procedural/paranormal novel. I carried my Kindle from room to room, reading while I burned dinner, ignored my kids, and was late for appointments.
The Driver is the story of a relatable hero, Michael Skellig, whose inner voice is prolific and hilarious in a “I had a good upbringing but have major attitude about life” kind of way. Skellig is brave and honorable, but cowardly and dishonorable at the same time. He’s a real person who makes bad choices based on saving good people. Readers will love him.
If you want to get lost in a cleverly woven tale of WhoDunnit, Why They Done It and How They Done It, you will thank me for recommending The Driver. Worth paying the most money I have ever paid for an eBook!
Mr. Hanson: Please get back to your computer and write the next Michael Skellig book in what’s bound to be a successful series to rival all those big NY Times Bestselling Author muckity mucks.

The Driver A Thriller Hart Hanson Books Reviews

As an aficionado of hard boiled fiction as my current go to masters of the art age I am always on the lookout for that new writer that will take the genre to its next level. My nominee is Hart Hanson who depicts the tough guy with a heart of gold with a deft hand and freshness that I find touching. The lead protagonist,Michael Skellig, has gathered around him a group of walking wounded veterans of our seemingly endless and unsung wars in the mideast. He has his own ghosts to live with as well. This extended family of disabled vets runs a small limo service in the Los Angeles area and the action opens with him hanging out by his Mercedes in an alley behind a hip club while his client debauches inside. Those ghosts of his that I mentioned are from opponents he has met in some of our nations various undeclared wars and survived in a kill or be killed situation. They whisper to him and he has learned the hard way that it pays to listen, and this ghost is whispering,"troubletroubletroubletroubletrou". He takes off running into the club in a breakneck attempt at stopping whatever bad is about to come down and the chase is on. If this makes the lead sound like a typical sociopathic cardboard cutout action hero nothing could be further from the opinion I had of him by book's end. Caring and compassionate perhaps excessively so,it is the cause of much suffering for him. The high point of the book and what made me a fan was the way his family of misfits, rejects and just plain crazies(only four of them but lots of baggage) pull together and care for each other. Don't worry there is plenty of action but there is a more to The Driver than chase scenes and body count. A reunion scene towards the end even got a trace of a tear out of me for the first time in too long. Add in a ending almost as good as the beginning and I had me a keeper. May Hart Hanson live long and prosper and write a sequel to this refreshing read.
I didn’t really enjoy this book. I like a book that makes you think or at least has a realistic plot. There are so many aspects of this story that are just plain dumb. I don’t like giving negative reviews, but this book just wasn’t for me.
Take a quirky and exciting ride with “The Driver”. This fun, hip and different suspense thriller has a protagonist who you will not only adore but will make you laugh out loud. His smart aleck humor as he interacts with interesting and sometimes wacky characters makes this book impossible to put down. Amazing this is a debut novel with characters who are unusual yet so real that you not only visualize them, but know them. It zips along accurately portraying Los Angeles with all its flaws and beauty. I desperately hope that this is not the last we will hear from this author.
And read it cover to cover in one long, eye-weary binge. Real people. Real situations. No 'glory of war' here, and may the fools who sit safely in the halls of power while sending our best and brightest to foreign shores to bleed out for their profit come up against the wounded warriors who fight their battles for them and see the world for what it is, cruelty and beauty together.
Brilliant writing and impossible to put down, The Driver walks readers through the underside of Los Angeles, with all the ugliness and filth intact and laid out for inspection. Yet the glamour of wealth isn't any prettier, hiding savage rot beneath pristine surfaces.
And all the misery and violence is presented with wit and humor, showing that survival often depends on a good attitude as much as a convenient weapon.
Buy it. Read it. And remember the scars war leaves on the bodies and souls of our young the next time a Washington windbag struts and postures, threatening to "take care of" those we disagree with.
This is a fast moving thriller with all the boxes checked (in my opinion). It has wonderful, complex characters; snappy dialogue; lots of skillfully written action; and, as another reviewer pointed out, great heart.

The novel's protagonist, Michael Skellig, is an ex-special forces veteran who owns an LA limo service that is staffed by his Afghan war compatriots. The party includes an affable illegal who was Skellig's in-country, a young triple amputee and badly traumatized, female mechanic. All are damaged goods in some way or another but, rescued by Skellig, they are now a family unit surviving civil life in SoCal together. The story opens with an assault on a limo business client--a world famous skateboarder with legions of fans and some apparent enemies. Skellig and his limo crew are pulled into the client's problems in a way that puts them all at serious physical and legal risk.

Highly enjoyable read. A book that finishes too early and cries for a sequel. If you are an admirer of the Junior Bender series by Tim Hallinan, you will definitely enjoy this one!
