Not another teen supernatural book! I've had it with vampires (sparkly or not), werewolves, and the ilk. The series that got the trend going were for the most part written fairly well. The late- comers to the party seem derivative at best and are far less well edited, written and proof-read. I am so happy that this book wasn't one of those. It comes at the supernatural from a different angle and with a new bad guy (girl) to be afraid of. I like the characters. Joy and her friends seem like nice kids. They make bad decisions and could definitely use a bit more adult supervision but such is the world of fiction. The adults need to stay out of the way for the kids to live out their stories. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

The Shadow and the Rose Ash Grove Chronicles Amanda DeWees 9781480099500 Books Reviews
I picked up this book knowing where the storyline was headed because I looked up retellings of the Scottish ballad Tam Lin that being said the author made a world I did not want to leave. Characters that seemed to be my best friends and truly a joy to read .
I actually began this book Leary and almost until the half way point debated on archiving and forgetting it. Please don't! I'd give it more stars had the begging grabbed me more. And it may for a younger reader. But it help enough mystery that I just needed to know. Glad I did. I won't gush or even say it was the best paranormal book that I've read. But I will tell you it is worth while. Different and unexpected and what was laying there before my eyes I did not see coming. (Yes parts of it maybe but that's to be expected, but what I've grown use to with the paranormal is where the twist comes in!!
It's like an old tale (that's long forgotten) but with a new spin! Really did enjoy it. Once I was through the first half, the rest I didn't put down till this review was complete!
Good night ) lol
I'm not going to lie. I have a very short attention span. I've read (or tried to read) several young adult novels/series and I usually get halfway through and throw them down in annoyance never to pick them up again. My problem with them? The writing/vocabulary is dumbed down. The characters are insipid navel-gazers. The dialogue doesn't ring true. The female protagonist's internal narratives can be boiled down to variations of "OMG _____ is so gorgeous, he'll never want me, clumsy awkward loser that I am" - when really it's made obvious from the get-go the heroine is a knockout, no matter how the author tries to "ugly-duckling" her up.
This is NOT the case with this novel. First of all, I read it in about 10 hours give or take. It's been a long time since a book has been able to get my attention and keep it, so kudos, Ms. DeWees!
Secondly, all the complaints I listed above? Not an issue with this book. Joy is a bright, self-effacing young woman. She's strong, with a sense of humor, but most importantly, she's REAL. She behaves, thinks, and speaks as a real person would. This can also be extended to her group of friends. They aren't just scenery to make Joy look good.
Tanner was a likeable character, wish we could have seen more of him, maybe some chapters from his POV, if anything to flesh him out more. The scenes between Joy and Tanner were really lovely, meaningful, and genuine.
***********SPOILERS************
My only complaints are that the council was ineffectual and utterly useless. Their lack of action about the threat Melisande posed made no sense. It might have been better to leave them out of the plot altogether since they really served no purpose other than to be a source of frustration for Joy.
I can't help but think that Melisande's fame and notoriety seemed a bit overblown to the point of unbelievability. No one that famous could keep that kind of a secret nowadays, not with tabloids, the internet, and conspiracy theorists. That part just did not ring true.
The other thing is I'm not completely on board with the whole baby thing. Kids having kids kinda saddens and squicks me out, even if they are as mature and level-headed as Joy and Tanner. Also, how the heck are they supposed to run around and have supernatural adventures with an infant strapped to their chests? Seems like an unnecessary complication.
**************End SPOILERS***************
Anyhoo, I liked the characters so much, I will give the rest of the series a shot and see where it goes. I hope the series will continue to surprise me. 😃 I'm also keen to check out Ms. DeWees historical fiction. Looks good!
I received this book as a gift in return of an honest review.
This is a wonderful story of love, loss and discovery.
Joy is such a strong and amazing young woman and will do anything and everything she can to save Tanner(Tristan). I really like how Tanner let it be known that beauty on the inside out weights the physical beauty and the inner beauty he sees in Joy out shines anything else. Through the love that Joy shows him it gives him the strength to evade Melisande and the evil grip she has on him. By Joy not giving up on Tanner or her love for him she has gotten him away from the evil succubi.
Now they can start their lives together and prepare for the birth of their daughter, and see what key Rose will play in their future. But they still do not know what has happened to Melisande or Raven, or what corner they could be lurking around.
This is such a great story and I look forward to reading the remaining books in the series, and HIGHLY recommend this book! will only allow 5 stars but I personally would give it a 10!

The Shadow and the Rose is an interesting story. It starts off a bit slow but eventually gets going. I felt like the main characters were rushed in their relationship as they hadn't even exactly forged a friendship first. Because of this, I don't feel very invested in the characters as I normally do. I'm still interested in the story line & where it's going and so I will be reading the rest of the series as I bought the boxed set for the today after finishing this book.
One nice thing about this book is that is was very well proofread compared to a lot of stories I
*Story Detail to come, however I don't spoil anything for the book.*
I also felt like Joy's reaction to the garden's appearance didn't fit with her lack of knowledge of the supernatural. She was only aware of one type of supernatural event & this wasn't it. I figured there should be more surprise & curiosity.
